Who We Are


Formed in 1819, Shelby County government plays an important role in delivery of governmental services to its residents. County government manages courts, the jail, maintains roads, provides human services, manages county assets, and oversees revenues and expenditures.

Our Mission

Shelby County’s mission is to provide top-quality services to its citizens in the most cost effective manner and to work with the cooperation of the community and other local government units to create a great place to live, work, & play.

What We Do

Shelby County initiates some services while other programs are run in cooperation with the state and federal government.

Public Safety
Sheriff is in charge of the jail, road patrol, 911 calls, criminal arrests, and dog laws.
EMA provides services related to natural and manmade disasters.

Infrastructure
Engineer maintains roads, bridges, culverts, sewer and drainage.

Courts
Three judges operate criminal, probate, juvenile, municipal and civil court.

Auditor/Treasurer
Together they oversee the county’s fiscal health. Auditor monitors real estate assessments, issues dog tags and various licenses. Treasurer is the chief investment officer and collects taxes.

Public Health
Disease prevention, immunization, restaurant inspection, building codes, birth and death certificates, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Human Services
Assist low-income family and children; oversee food stamps, Medicaid, child support, child abuse and neglect, foster care, and child placement.

Economic Development
A catalyst to create jobs, promotes business growth, and develop workforce training.

Elections
Oversees all federal, state and county elections, including school and township elections.

Recorder
Records and maintains all real estate transactions, deed, liens, mortgages, and subdivisions plans.

Clerk of Court
Maintains records of all court proceedings, marriage license, autopsy reports, passports, and vehicle titles.

Extension/Soil and Water
Provides agriculture, 4-H, consumer science information. and promotes conservation practices in soil, water, and environmental management.

Veteran Service
Provides veterans with emergency financial needs, also assist veterans and their families who are entitled to DIC and all VA benefits.

Regional Planning
Provides Zoning, Subdivision Surveys, Flood Plain, Fair Housing, Economic Development, Comprehensive Plan, Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP), and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for outside the city.

County Nursing Home
Provides medical services 24 hours a day including specialized care for Alzheimers/Dementia and cognitive impairment, Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy services, The Adult Day Services, Nutritional Services offers home delivered meals and convenient cafeteria style.
