Romer’s Catering is proud to announce that their very own Abby Kramer has won a $4,000 Scholarship to The Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati for “The Best Teen Chef Competition.” Abby will be attending the Art Institute in the Fall. It is a 3 and 1/2 year program where she will learn everything from preparing dishes to computer systems and kitchen management and beverage pairing with food.
Abby is a Senior at St. Henry High School and aspires to be a culinary chef. She has worked for Romer’s Catering for 3 and 1/2 years and says that she has learned so much through her experience with Romer’s. Her favorite part of her job is working with fun people and getting great experience for future endeavors. Her favorite foods to prepare are breakfast foods. She received her culinary inspirations from her Grandma and from Romer’s Catering head chef, Mary Jutte, and Jeremy Edwards. Abby is interested in moving back home some day to share her skill set with our community.
For the competition, Abby prepared Shrimp Cocktail, Sauteed Chicken Breast, Rice Pilaf and Broccoli. She had to prepare a creative sauce for the chicken and that’s what separated her recipe from the others! She also had to do 30 minutes of knife skills with specific cuts on vegetables, chop parsley, mince garlic, slice mushrooms, and chop onions to exact measurements, and dice a tomato and then had 2 hours to prepare the appetizer and main course. She said that it was hard to pace herself since the plates had to be done at a specific time. She explained that it was kind of like Top Chef with a little more time. They were tested for knife skills, sanitation and safety, mise en place (organization), cooking techniques, clean-up, food temperature, taste and flavor, texture and doneness, portion size, and presentation.
